ODBC Connection issues with newer Tableau Desktop versions
Beginning with version 2018.1.6 of Tableau Desktop, you will receive an error message when connecting to your DV Server via ODBC. You will only be affected when you connect to Data Virtuality using our ODBC driver. If you connect to your Analytical Storage directly, you will not be affected.
This is the Tableau error message for the issue:
An error occurred while communicating with the data source.
The connection to the data source might have been lost.
The protocol is disconnected!
Generic ODBC requires additional configuration. The driver and DSN (data source name) must be installed and configured to match the connection.
Unable to connect using the DSN named "DV Webinar". Check that the DSN exists and is a valid connection.
There is currently a workaround available, that lets you connect to the data:
On Windows:
a. Make sure all instances of Tableau Desktop are closed.
b. Open the command line
c. Navigate to the bin folder (ex: cd C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau 2018.3\bin )
d. Launch Tableau using the following command: tableau.exe -DProtocolServerReconnect=1
On MacOS:
a. Make sure all instances of Tableau Desktop are closed.
b. Open Terminal
c. Launch Tableau using the following command: open -n ./Tableau\ Desktop\ 2018.3.app --args -DProtocolServerReconnect=1
Please let us know if you run into any issues using the workaround.
We are closely working together with Tableau to provide a solution and fix the problem.

Hi Darian,
on Windows, the workaround is not necessary anymore if you apply this resolution:
This is basically a one time DSN config change that will adapt the driver settings for recent Tableau versions.
Please let me know if this solves the issue for you, thanks :)
Have a good weekend!
Best,
Matthias
